Brazilian Butt Lift FAQ: 5 Top Questions Answered

Kentucky plastic surgery

The Brazilian butt lift — have you heard of it? Many people are familiar with the term as it relates to a style of exercise, but more recently the phrase has been gaining popularity in plastic surgery. Brazilian butt lift procedures involve lifting and adding volume to the buttocks, creating a more shapely and curvaceous derrière. Plastic surgeons here in Louisville and beyond have begun fielding questions about this procedure on a regular basis. Here are the top 5 questions we hear at our Kentucky practice about this innovative plastic surgery procedure.

1. Does the procedure involve buttock implants?

No. A Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure, so no implants are used. Instead, we use your own fat from elsewhere on your body to enhance your buttocks. A Brazilian butt lift may be confused with a traditional buttock augmentation procedure, in which implants are used to add volume to the area.

2. Where does the transferred fat come from?

The fat can come from anywhere on your body where you’d like to reduce it. For most people, we do fat transfer using liposuction from the hips, abdomen, or thighs. This fat is then filtered and transferred to the buttocks, where it is injected back into the body to create a shapelier, more rounded rear.

3. How long is the recovery?

The recovery process is usually a few weeks. For the first week, bruising and swelling are common in both the buttocks and the area where the fat was removed. Patients should avoid sitting on their bottoms for about 3 weeks after the procedure. However, the recovery timeline depends on the individual patient, how much fat he or she has grafted, and other factors that will be discussed by your board-certified plastic surgeon.

4. What does the recovery process entail?

Like with most surgeries, patients are prescribed some pain medication to help enhance their comfort. Patients should drink lots of water and refrain from any strenuous activity for a few weeks. During follow-up appointments with their surgeon, patients will get a better idea of the requirements needed to optimize healing and results. After a month or 2, most swelling and bruising have faded, and patients can begin enjoying their newly enhanced contours.

5. Is more than one treatment needed?

Fat cells can be vulnerable when moved from one area to another. Therefore, fat transfer procedures involve the loss of some fat cells. At least 1 minor follow-up procedure may be needed in some cases to improve symmetry in the final results. Dr. Mizuguchi and I are both highly trained and experienced in fat grafting, and we take careful precautions to ensure the greatest number of fat cells survive the transfer processes.
