Does Liposuction Help With Weight Loss?

Young woman measures waist and examines weight after liposuction procedure.

Body contouring procedures are now more popular than ever. In particular, liposuction is a great way to trim unwanted fat and sculpt your curves. Because of the procedure’s effectiveness, liposuction patients at our Louisville, KY practice often ask if surgery will help them lose a significant amount of weight. Unfortunately, this question is more complicated than patients may expect.

While liposuction won’t dramatically change the number on the scale, it can still assist with weight loss and help contour the body in several ways. In this blog post I’ll answer some common questions I receive about liposuction surgery and weight loss.

Can I lose weight with liposuction?

Yes and no. While you may lose a few pounds during the process, liposuction shouldn’t be thought of in terms of weight loss. The focus of the surgery is to remove stubborn pockets of fat that diet and exercise alone won’t fix.

Depending on the patient, liposuction surgery may involve removing a large volume of fatty tissue. The risks from surgery increase when more than 5 liters of fat are removed, so surgeons stay below this limit for your safety.

What areas can liposuction trim?

Liposuction is excellent for removing fat cells from the neck, arms, lower abdomen, chest, thighs, and other areas. Surgeons can use it to target specific spots and skillfully contour the body.

The fat cells suctioned out during liposuction are permanently removed and will not “grow back.” However, this does not prevent future weight gain. Maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery to help prevent the remaining fat cells from growing larger and refilling the newly trimmed area.

How can liposuction help you live a healthier lifestyle?

After sculpting their body through liposuction, many patients find a renewed interest in fitness. When you’re no longer self-conscious about your figure, investing in activewear and going to the gym is much more enjoyable.

Liposuction is a great way to jump-start healthy choices and inspire long-term change. When combined with an active lifestyle, liposuction surgery can have a positive impact on both body and mind.

Are there liposuction alternatives?

At our Louisville and Lexington locations, we also offer CoolSculpting® as a body contouring solution. CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that freezes away fat cells that the body later sheds. This procedure is a great choice for those who prefer a treatment with a shorter recovery period and a lower price.

Our practice also offers SAFELipo® for those interested in a liposuction option with a shorter recovery period. This method is often combined with other popular treatments, such as a tummy tuck or a mommy makeover.

Overall, liposuction and weight loss can go hand-in-hand, but not always in the way patients may expect. When paired with an active lifestyle and healthy mindset, liposuction can contour the body and transform people’s lives.
