Why Women Want Smaller Breasts

The reasons women get breast reduction at our Louisville, KY, practice vary, but nearly all the patients share something in common — satisfaction with the outcomes. Many patients call the procedure life-changing because of the physical and emotional relief they feel after reducing the size of their overly large breasts.

Some women have lived with large breasts all of their lives and have considered breast reduction surgery for years. Others have seen their breasts change size and shape after having children, or want to reverse the changes created by breast implants.

Let’s take a closer look at the most common reasons women choose breast reduction surgery, along with some before-and-after photos that demonstrate the kinds of results patients can expect:

“Pregnancy and breastfeeding changed my breasts.”

It’s normal for women’s breasts to get larger during pregnancy, but the changes after childbirth vary. Many women’s breasts lose volume after having children and appear deflated and saggy. For others, their breasts remain overly large, often creating physical and emotional discomfort. These changes can be especially unwelcome for women who were happy with the size of their breasts prior to having children. Breast reduction surgery in these cases is often combined with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck, as part of a mommy makeover.

“I want to be more active.”

Overly large breasts can interfere with an active lifestyle for women at any age, or even for adolescent girls who want to participate in school sports. It can be difficult for large-breasted women to jog or to play tennis, racquetball, or other sports, even with the most supportive bra.

“I need relief from shoulder and back pain.”

Physical symptoms caused by overly large breasts include shoulder, neck, and back pain that can, in some cases, lead to other issues. When a woman’s primary care doctor determines that the size of her breasts are responsible for physical symptoms, she can usually get all or part of her breast reduction surgery covered by health insurance. It is important to have your insurance company approve the procedure before scheduling the surgery.

“I have breast implants, but I no longer want large breasts.”

Women who underwent breast augmentation surgery earlier in their lives sometimes decide that they no longer want larger breasts. Removing breast implants, or breast revision surgery, is often combined with breast reduction and breast lift procedures because the patient’s skin and tissue have been stretched by the weight of the implants.

My insurance changed 1/1/18 to humana choice. Is Dr. Mayes a participant in this insurance? I have already had a consultation and would like to move forward if so. Thank you!

Our board-certified plastic surgeons do perform liposuction for the areas surrounding the breast, for example, axillary fat (fat located under the armpit). However, if a patient is looking to reduce the size of her breast the doctor would recommend a breast reduction. If you would like to learn more or to set up a consultation please call 502-899-9979. We would be more than happy to assist you
