Five Plastic Surgery Myths

Plastic Surgeon Clears Up the Misconceptions

While it is important to do your research and ask friends and family for advice before going under the knife, it often results in an unclear line between fact and fiction. Because rumors tend to surround certain plastic surgery procedures, particularly breast implants, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Bradley Calobrace of the Calobrace Plastic Surgery Center, is dispelling the top five myths in the industry:

  1. Breast Implants Need to Be Replaced Every Decade:
Replacing implants has largely to do with the individual patient. “There is no set expiration date for implants,” says Dr. Calobrace. “Many of the newer implant options buy patients more time; some patients may not even need to replace them.”
  2. The Bigger the Better:
Age, body type and available breast tissue are all factors that need to be taken into consideration when picking an implant size. Going too large has its drawbacks, such as risk of back problems and premature sagging.
  3. Saline is Safer than Silicone:
Although silicone implants were off the market for several years, they received full FDA approval in 2007. “While patients might weigh the pros and cons for each option, studies have proved both silicone and saline are very safe,” says Dr. Calobrace.
  4. Breast Implants Cause Cancer:
There has never been a scientific link between breast implants and cancer. While this myth has been around for quite sometime, years of studies have failed to validate this theory. “The implants on the market today are FDA-approved and are completely safe,” adds Dr. Calobrace.
  5. Breast Implants Rupture Easily:
While there have been cases of breast implants rupturing, it is an extremely rare occurrence. “Newly released implants such as the gummy bear implant are made from a firm silicone-gel, which is made to withstand pressure while offering a natural look and feel,” says Dr. Calobrace.
