Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and shape of the labia, improving comfort and the aesthetic appearance of the labia. Changes due to childbirth or menopause can cause changes to the labia, but some irregularities are can be genetic. Dr. Chet Mays treats every case individually, respecting the sensitivity of this procedure.
Labiaplasty is both an aesthetic and functional surgery to improve the appearance of the labia and reduce irritation or discomfort caused by enlarged labia. This surgery helps relieve and improve the following:
Discomfort during sex and vigorous exercise.
Discomfort wearing tight-fitting clothing.
Damage caused during childbirth.
Changes caused by menopause.
Appearance of the labia which may cause embarrassment.

Unlike labiaplasty, vaginoplasty is often a functional or reconstructive procedure that’s designed to reduce the size of the vaginal canal. Even though it typically isn’t done to treat the vagina’s external appearance, vaginoplasty may reduce the visibility of protruding tissue or a wide opening.
Vaginal muscles often lose strength and tightness because of childbirth and age, diminishing sensation and reducing the pleasure experienced during intimate sexual contact for both partners. Internal vaginal changes after pregnancy can also lead to embarrassing problems such as stress incontinence. While surgical vaginoplasty is a common solution to these problems, our surgeons offer the non-surgical diVa and diVaTyte™ procedures instead.
Vaginoplasty is often a functional or reconstructive surgery Dr. Mays performs to address the effects of childbirth and aging on the vagina and surrounding tissues. The surgery may include any of the following:
Repairing stretched and separated vaginal muscles
Tightening and narrowing the vaginal opening and canal
Removing excess lax vaginal lining
Enhancing sensation and sexual satisfaction for the patient and her partner
Even though it typically isn’t performed to address the vagina’s external appearance, vaginoplasty may reduce the visibility of protruding tissue or a wide opening. Dr. Mays may also perform labiaplasty to reduce physical discomfort and self-consciousness from stretched and misshapen labia.
Internal vaginal changes after pregnancy can also lead to embarrassing problems such as stress incontinence. While vaginoplasty can help, the non-surgical diVa® procedure may be recommended instead.
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons
Our plastic surgeons have specialized expertise in a complete range of procedures and are dedicated to bringing the most advanced techniques and technology to the region.
Dr. Mays usually performs vaginoplasty as an outpatient procedure with the patient under twilight or general anesthesia in our AAAASF–approved operating rooms. Using an incision placed in the perineum behind the vagina, Dr. Mays removes excess stretched inner lining, repairs muscles surrounding the vagina, and tightens the vaginal opening. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the repairs.
What to Expect During Recovery from Vaginoplasty
After vaginal rejuvenation surgery, patients may experience swelling and discomfort that can be controlled with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. Within a few days, most patients can resume normal daily activities.
Return to Work After Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Patients are usually ready to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery. The use of tampons and physical activities such as strenuous exercise, sexual intercourse, and heavy lifting will be restricted for 6 to 12 weeks as directed by Dr. Mays.
Once completely healed, patients enjoy increased comfort and sensitivity during intercourse and feel more confident about the way they look.

Childbirth and aging can change both the sensitivity and the appearance of the vagina. But even though women address age-related changes to their faces and other areas of the body, they are less likely to think about reversing aging’s effects on the vagina. That trend is gradually changing as the effectiveness of both surgical and nonsurgical treatments become more well-known.
At CaloSpa, laser vaginal rejuvenation at our Louisville and Lexington med spas is performed using diVa and diVaTyte. diVa uses a hybrid fractional laser to resurface the deeper layers of the vaginal wall. During a treatment, which lasts about 3 to 5 minutes, the provider inserts the handpiece into the vaginal canal, and the laser energy creates microchannels in the tissue. This stimulates the body’s healing response, resulting in the growth of healthy, new tissue.
Patients can resume their normal daily activities following the treatment, but we recommend avoiding sexual intercourse for 48 hours after the procedure.
Women considering labiaplasty may opt instead for diVaTyte, another nonsurgical procedure that uses infrared energy. The treatment is ideal for women who:
are self-conscious about the appearance of their labia
want to reduce excess skin that causes irritation, rubbing, or chafing during exercise, such as running or cycling
experience painful intercourse because of labial friction or movement
The in-office procedure can be completed in about 10 minutes. Patients don’t experience any discomfort and they can resume their normal activities immediately following the treatment.
