For many women, the aftereffects of childbirth, weight changes, and the natural aging process leave the vagina and surrounding tissues stretched, torn, and lacking elasticity. Dr. Chet Mays, a caring, experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, offers vaginoplasty, often called vaginal rejuvenation, in Louisville, KY, to help women feel more comfortable and confident by repairing this highly sensitive area.
Women considering vaginal rejuvenation travel from Lexington and throughout Kentucky to CaloAesthetics® Plastic Surgery Center. Request a consultation using our online form to meet with Dr. Mays or call our office at (502) 899-9979 to schedule an appointment.
Vaginoplasty is often a functional or reconstructive surgery Dr. Mays performs to address the effects of childbirth and aging on the vagina and surrounding tissues. The surgery may include any of the following:
- Repairing stretched and separated vaginal muscles
- Tightening and narrowing the vaginal opening and canal
- Removing excess lax vaginal lining
- Renewing self confidence
- Enhancing sensation and sexual satisfaction for the patient and her partner
Even though it typically isn't performed to address the vagina's external appearance, vaginoplasty may reduce the visibility of protruding tissue or a wide opening. Dr. Mays may also perform labiaplasty to reduce physical discomfort and self-consciousness from stretched and misshapen labia.
Internal vaginal changes after pregnancy can also lead to embarrassing problems such as stress incontinence. While vaginoplasty can help, the non-surgical ThermiVa® procedure may be recommended instead.
About the Vaginoplasty Procedure
Dr. Mays usually performs vaginoplasty as outpatient procedure with the patient under twilight or general anesthesia in our AAAASF–approved operating rooms. Using an incision placed in the perineum behind the vagina, Dr. Mays removes excess stretched inner lining, repairs muscles surrounding the vagina, and tightens the vaginal opening. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the repairs.
What to Expect During Recovery
After vaginal rejuvenation surgery, patients may experience swelling and discomfort that can be controlled with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. Within a few days, most patients can resume normal daily activities.
Return to Work
Patients are usually ready to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery. The use of tampons and physical activities such as strenuous exercise, sexual intercourse, and heavy lifting will be restricted for 6 to 12 weeks as directed by Dr. Mays.
Once completely healed, patients enjoy increased comfort and sensitivity during intercourse and feel more confident about the way they look.
Unlike labiaplasty, vaginoplasty is often a functional or reconstructive procedure that's designed to reduce the size of the vaginal canal. Even though it typically isn't done to treat the vagina's external appearance, vaginoplasty may reduce the visibility of protruding tissue or a wide opening.
Vaginal muscles often lose strength and tightness because of childbirth and age, diminishing sensation and reducing the pleasure experienced during intimate sexual contact for both partners. Internal vaginal changes after pregnancy can also lead to embarrassing problems such as stress incontinence. While surgical vaginoplasty is a common solution to these problems, our surgeons offer the non-surgical ThermiVa™ procedure instead.
Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
The increasing interest in vaginal rejuvenation has led to the introduction of safe and effective non-surgical treatments to tighten both the labia and the vagina. We are proud to offer ThermiVa, a temperature-controlled radiofrequency treatment that uses heat to promote the production of collagen. This is the same proven technique used for decades in facial rejuvenation procedures.

ThermiVa is one of several treatments available with the ThermiRF™ system and is a comfortable, non-surgical, no-downtime radiofrequency treatment that tightens the labia and vagina. ThermiVa rejuvenates the vaginal area for women who:
- Feel "loose" vaginally since having children or after menopause
- Have trouble reaching orgasm
- Occasionally leak urine when coughing, sneezing, or exercising
- Feel their intimate relationships are suffering because of these changes
Noticeable improvement often occurs after 2 ThermiVa treatments, but we recommend 3 treatments to get the optimal results. Treatment sessions last about 30 minutes and are scheduled a month apart. No anesthesia is necessary to undergo the procedure, and patients may engage in sexual intercourse the same day of the treatment. The long-lasting results improve the cosmetic appearance of the vagina, in addition to reviving patients' sexual pleasure and helping reduce urinary incontinence.
