Liposuction

Most of us have at least one area we’d like to slim down or reshape. At CaloAesthetics® Plastic Surgery Center, we offer many advanced body contouring solutions. The most effective and most popular is liposuction in our Lexington and Louisville, KY, practice. While it’s not a weight loss solution, liposuction can definitely put the finishing touches on the attractive vision you have for yourself.

To find out how liposuction can give you slimmer and more attractive contours, request a consultation at CaloAesthetics® Plastic Surgery Center in Kentucky or call (502) 899-9979 to schedule your visit.

Improvements From Liposuction

Women and men choose liposuction to remove fat from most areas of the face and body, including:

  • Cheeks, jowls, and double chin
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen including muffin top
  • Buttocks, thighs, and legs

Liposuction is often used to harvest fat for fat grafting procedures that can enhance the face or the body, such as the Brazilian butt lift. If you’re considering liposuction to remove fat that’s causing a double chin, you may be a good candidate for KYBELLA®, a nonsurgical injectable treatment that is an effective neck liposuction alternative.

For men and women with loose pockets of skin being treated with liposuction, we recommend combining liposuction with Renuvion®, a minimally invasive skin tightening treatment designed to enhance the results of liposuction by lifting and tightening skin on the face, neck, and body.

Liposuction Treatment Areas

About the Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in our private surgery suite while the patient is under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. The specifics of the procedure depend on the type of liposuction being performed.

Types of Liposuction

Dr. Calobrace is experienced in several types of liposuction, enabling him to provide the most attractive, natural-looking results regardless of the areas being treated. Options include:

Tumescent Liposuction

This technique has been safely used for many years. First, the surgeon injects tumescent fluid into the unwanted fat to numb the area, inhibit bleeding, and make the fat cells easier to remove. Next, the surgeon makes tiny incisions near the area being sculpted and inserts a narrow, metal tube called a cannula through which the fat is suctioned out of the body.

Internal Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

This technique combines internal ultrasonic energy application and tumescent fluid injection for the reduction of fatty deposits. The sound waves delivered to the tip of the metal cannula effectively liquefy the fat which is gently drained from the body. The “liquefaction” of the fatty deposits tends to have a “feathering” effect, minimizing any tunnels or depressions in the skin. The result is smoother, more sculpted contours.

This technique allows larger amounts of fat to be removed than other techniques because it:

  • Minimizes blood loss
  • Facilitates passage of the cannula through the unwanted fat

UAL is especially effective in fibrous regions of the body (such as the chest/breast or lower back) and is also used for larger volume cases, redo liposuction, and selected male patients.

External Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (E-UAL)

E-UAL enhances the tumescent technique with the external application of ultrasound waves on the skin prior to suctioning the unwanted fat. E-UAL has wide application and is the technique most often performed at the practice. The ultrasound energy is believed to assist in “loosening” the fat to allow more gentle removal. There also may be an effect on the skin or superficial fat that aids in skin retraction (tightening). E-UAL does allow for smaller incisions and is an excellent alternative or complement to UAL.

SAFELipo®

We also offer an enhanced form of liposuction called SAFELipo. This innovative procedure uses a patented 3-step approach (Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization) to break fat apart before removing it and smoothing out the remaining fat. During the separation step, Dr. Calobrace uses a specialized tool called a basket cannula to loosen fat gently from other tissues and emulsify it. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is also sometimes used during this step to help break up fat. This process makes it easier to remove fat during the second step, aspiration. Because the fat has been emulsified, it can be suctioned away through a very thin surgical tube, which requires only a tiny incision. In the final step, fat equalization, the surgeon sculpts the remaining fat into a smooth, even layer of local fat grafts, minimizing the risk of contour irregularities such as dents and waves.

SAFELipo can be used in all the same areas as traditional liposuction where a person might want to remove stubborn fat, including:

  • Face
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Upper back
  • Arms

The fat equalization process is a major benefit of SAFELipo. Past forms of liposuction sometimes left patients with rippled or dimpled skin in the area where the fat was removed. Our SAFELipo patients, though, are left with a healthy blanket of overlying fat that produces visibly smooth results. The fat equalization feature can also be useful in revision cases in which patients are unhappy with the results of previous liposuction procedures.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Liposuction procedure costs depend on the area(s) of the body being treated, including the additional time required when treating multiple areas, the techniques used for the procedure, and whether or not liposuction is combined with another procedure. At CaloAesthetics, liposuction of the first area starts at $4,500. Your surgeon will perform a full assessment during your consultation and will provide an accurate liposuction estimate at that time. Patients can take advantage of financing options to set up affordable monthly payments.

What to Expect During Recovery

Following liposuction, foam bandages and an elastic support garment are placed on treated areas to minimize swelling and optimize results. As the swelling decreases, the elastic support garment is replaced with a smaller support garment. Healing rates vary among individuals. The sutures are typically removed within 4 to 7 days following the surgery.

Lymphatic massage begins about 1 week after surgery. This therapy is helpful in reducing the swelling. While the procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, an overnight stay in the hospital is preferred by some patients. Pain medications and antibiotics are prescribed for the post-operative recovery period.

Return to Work

Recovery time after liposuction varies, but most patients are able to return to work in a few days. Patients are usually completely healed after about 6 weeks.
