Model ImageMany women during puberty or after childbirth may see their labia minora become unusually large or misshapen. Other women develop loss of fullness in the labia majora after menopause. Surgical labial reduction, also called labiaplasty, can greatly improve the aesthetic appearance of the female genitalia, and alleviate the discomfort and embarrassment that may accompany excess labial tissue. The surgeons at CaloAesthetics® Plastic Surgery Center perform labiaplasty in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, to help women relieve their physical discomfort and improve their confidence.

When performed by one of our skilled plastic surgeons, labiaplasty can be a satisfying way to feel more comfortable. Request a consultation today or call (502) 899-9979 to schedule your visit and learn about this procedure.

The anatomy of the female genitalia can vary significantly. Like breast sizes, the desired appearance of the labia will vary with individual preferences.

In some individuals the labia minora (the inner frond of tissue) can be quite large and redundant creating both a cosmetic and sometimes even a functional concern. Some women develop hypertrophic or enlarged labia minora after multiple childbirths or as the result of aging.

Improvements From Labiaplasty

The best candidates for labiaplasty are healthy women who have oversized, sagging, or asymmetrical inner or outer labia. Improvements from this procedure include:

  • Relieving irritation and discomfort during sexual activity and athletics (such as bicycling, spinning), and while wearing fitted pants or bathing suits
  • Repairing damage caused by childbirth
  • Restoring fullness to the labia majora after menopause
  • Improving self-esteem

Women who would like attain multiple improvements with one surgery may choose to have labiaplasty combined with another cosmetic procedure such as a tummy tuck or liposuction.

About the Labiaplasty Procedure

Reduction of the labia minora is the most common genital enhancement surgery our surgeons perform for women. Many women choose to combine labiaplasty with vaginal rejuvenation (vaginoplasty) to tighten and repair the vagina and surrounding tissues. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia. Most patients will take oral pain medication and/or sedatives. Twilight or general anesthesia is also available and can be performed in our AAAASF approved operating rooms. The procedure takes less than 1 hour.

What to Expect During Recovery

During the recovery period, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1 to 2 weeks.

Return to Work

Most labiaplasty patients are able to return to work in a few days. Sexual activities may be resumed about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Labial incisions usually heal very nicely and are rarely noticeable.
