Plastic Surgeon Tells All About New “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants

FDA Approves New Silicone-Gel Implants

The Food and Drug Administration approved a new silicone gel breast implant last week after seven years of research studying 941 women. The Natrelle 410 silicone-gel implant is made by Allergan and has been highly anticipated by plastic surgeons for years. The “gummy bear” nickname comes from the implants’ dense, semi-solid form due to its high-strength silicone consistency.

“The teardrop shape and gel consistency of these new implants help maintain shape and hold better position in the breast,” says Dr. M. Bradley Calobrace, board-certified plastic surgeon. “The gummy bear implants offer unique advantages to saline implants as well as other silicone implants, and will give patients a more natural option.”

The Natrelle 410 implants provide not only a more natural look and feel, but are also less likely to cause a rippling or wrinkling effect that is often seen with other implants. In addition, liquid-filled implants are at risk of rupturing and leaking, while the silicone-gel implants are less likely to leak and can last longer than saline implants.

“We are seeing great improvements in the plastic surgery field, and the Natrelle 410 implants are an indicator of that,” continues Dr. Calobrace. “As we move towards a more natural look in breast augmentation, we are also seeing a more natural feel, and the high-strength silicone-gel implant is another big step in that direction.”
