Your Guide to Bra Shopping After Breast Augmentation

Grid of colorful bras to choose from after breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation is an exciting experience, and breast augmentation patients at our Lexington, KY, plastic surgery office tell us that buying new bras is the icing on the cake. However, the process presents some challenges and considerations, especially in the first few months after your surgery as your body recovers and your results take shape.

In this blog post, I’ll discuss a few key things you need to know about buying new bras after breast augmentation.

Recovery Bras

In the first couple of weeks after your surgery, you’ll likely experience some swelling and sensitivity. You’ll need a garment that can keep your breasts supported and compressed without irritating your incisions. We recommend recovery bras by Ipomia, a brand we helped create alongside a team of designers, fellow plastic surgeons, and former breast augmentation patients.

You’ll need to wear your compression garment around the clock for the first couple of days and as often as possible during the first few weeks.

Transitional Bras

Though you’ll be able to move away from compression garments during the first few months, it’s important to maintain plenty of support and to avoid underwires as your incisions continue to heal.

It’s a good idea to invest in a couple of bras you love and feel confident in, but you should also remember that as your implants settle and swelling subsides, you may still experience size fluctuations. Don’t break the bank buying lots of new items right away. To learn more about the implant settling process, see our previous blog post.

Getting Refitted

When your results are fully developed, you’ll want to work with a professional to determine your new size. Even if you had an expected size in mind heading into surgery, it’s likely your actual size will differ a bit, because we measure implants in cc and not cup sizes.

In addition to accurately measuring your new size, a professional may also be able to recommend styles that work well with your new shape. This helps flatter and support your results as effectively and attractively as possible.

Exploring Your New Options

Use this moment as a chance to explore new styles that will put your figure in the best light. It’s best to do this in person so you can see what works on your body. Online shopping is best done down the line, once you have a better idea of how certain brands and silhouettes look on your new figure.

As you shop, remember that it’s essential to maintain proper support to help extend the lifespan of your results and fight gravity’s effects on your implants.
