About the Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure performed by Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Quintero as an outpatient procedure using a local or general anesthetic. First, fat is collected using liposuction. The surgeon takes special care to keep as many fat cells alive as possible. Many patients choose to have areas of the body or face sculpted at this time, such as the hips, thighs, or under the chin.

After the harvested fat is prepared, it is injected into the desired areas of the buttocks. While not all of the transferred fat will take, the fat that is viable after 3 months is likely to remain that way.

What’s Involved in the Procedure?

A Brazilian butt lift is typically completed in a series of carefully planned steps designed to enhance both shape and proportion. Your surgeon first identifies areas with excess fat—commonly the abdomen, waist, hips, flanks, or thighs—and performs precise liposuction to gently remove the fat. This step not only gathers material for transfer but also helps contour surrounding areas for a more sculpted silhouette.

Once the fat is collected, it is purified to isolate the healthiest, most viable fat cells. Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Quintero then strategically injects this fat into specific layers of the buttocks to create a fuller, rounder, and naturally balanced look. Their technique focuses on safely placing the fat above the muscle for optimal shape, longevity, and safety. Most procedures take a few hours and are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian butt lift may be a good option for patients who want fuller, rounder buttock contours using their own natural fat instead of implants. Ideal candidates are in good general health, at a stable body weight, and have enough excess fat in areas like the abdomen, flanks, or thighs to support fat transfer. This procedure is also well-suited for individuals who want to improve overall body proportions, create more defined curves, or correct flatness or asymmetry.

Patients should understand that results rely on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, and following all postoperative guidelines to support fat survival. A consultation with Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Quintero helps determine whether a Brazilian butt lift—or a non-surgical alternative such as Sculptra®—is the best approach for your goals.

What to Expect During Recovery

Patient experiences vary after a Brazilian butt lift; in general, you can expect areas where fat was harvested and where it was placed on the buttocks to be sore, swollen, and bruised.

A standard compression garment will need to be worn for approximately 1 week after the procedure to minimize swelling and encourage smooth results.

Other Things to Know

Because the patient’s own fat tissue is used, there is no risk of allergic reaction with fat grafting. It may be necessary to return for follow-up treatments if fat does not take evenly or if additional fullness is desired. Patients who do not have enough fat for this procedure may choose a nonsurgical butt lift with Sculptra ® injections.

Return to Work

Most patients are ready to return to work in about 1 week, but should avoid sitting for extended periods and refrain from strenuous exercise for about 2 to 3 weeks.
