Gull-Wing Lift

This plastic surgery procedure involves an incision along the upper border of the lip, along the junction between the vermilion border (pink lip skin) and the normal flesh-colored upper lip skin. A strip of skin is removed, and the result is a lifting effect on the lip with more of the pink skin showing.

This improvement is very helpful for patients with very thin lips who have little of their lip showing. The gull-wing lift can be performed on the upper lip or lower lip. Risks include poor scarring, swelling, sensation changes, and asymmetry.

Bullhorn Lift

This technique involves an incision that resembles the horns of a bull and follows the curves at the base of the nose. The effect is shortening the length of the upper lip (lifting the position of the top lip upward) and exposing more of the pink lip skin. The bullhorn lift can:

  • Provide a more attractive upper lip appearance
  • Expose the tips of the central upper teeth
  • Decrease the lip-to-nose ratio

This procedure can be useful in all age groups but is especially helpful for aging lips, which become creased and elongated over time. Risks include scarring, swelling, excessive shortening, relapse, inadequate vermillion show, and asymmetry.
