How Big is Too Big?

Dr. Calobrace Discusses Size Considerations for Breast Implants

According to a study completed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in 2012. But before deciding to undergo the procedure, there are many components to consider, including the ever important size choice. With certain celebrities making waves in the news after extreme enhancements, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. M Bradley Calobrace gives his advice for selecting the best breast size for an individual.

“There are many factors to consider when determining the most appropriate breast implant size: a patient’s weight, health, expectations, anatomy, etc.,” says Dr. Calobrace. “You also have to consider whether or not the patient has enough breast tissue to cover and support the implant. The bottom line is that any reputable and ethical plastic surgeon will discourage a patient from seeking extreme breast enlargement and will suggest something safer and more natural.”

One of the most important factors in addition to health concerns is comfort. “Remember that bigger isn’t always better,” continues Dr. Calobrace. “Our goal is to make patients feel their best, and we think the best way to achieve this is through natural looking breast enhancements.”

Dr. Calobrace continues to explain that with new technology and continuing research, the plastic surgery field is making strides in creating safer implants that feel and look natural. Most recently, the FDA approved the Natrelle 410 silicone-gel implant or “gummy bear” implant, which has a dense, semi-solid form due to its high-strength silicone consistency. According to Dr. Calobrace, “The teardrop shape and gel consistency of these new implants help maintain shape and hold better position in the breast and they are less prone to excessive scar tissue.”
