What to Expect Before, During & After Your Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeover surgery is one of the most effective ways to slim and sculpt the body. It is a combination of procedures—such as breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and more—that can fix multiple problem areas at once. However, it’s easy to feel intimidated by a surgery that involves so many customizable details and a longer recovery time. Some women don’t know what to expect and may feel nervous about the process.

If you’re considering a mommy makeover in the Louisville or Lexington, KY, area, here are a few basics about the surgery—easily broken down into what you should know before, during, and after the procedure.

Before: Consultation

The first step in any plastic surgery journey is a personal consultation. During this time, you’ll come into our practice and talk one-on-one with your doctor. After discussing your goals and performing a physical exam, your surgeon will put together a custom surgical plan. Some patients concerned about saggy breasts often benefit from breast augmentation and a breast lift, for example, while those who want to tone their tummies will appreciate the results of a tummy tuck and liposuction.

The best candidates for mommy makeover surgery are those who want to fix multiple areas, are near their pre-pregnancy weight, and are finished growing their family. If you have recently had a child, we recommend waiting at least 3 months after you have finished breastfeeding to allow your hormones to return to normal before surgery.

During: Operation

The average mommy makeover surgery takes around 3 to 6 hours to perform. The actual length of the procedure depends on the treatments you have included as part of your mommy makeover package. In general, surgical time estimates are:

  • Breast Augmentation: 1 to 3 hours
  • Breast Lift: 2 to 3 hours
  • Tummy Tuck: 2 to 4 hours
  • Liposuction: 1 hour

After your procedure, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home. You may leave surgery wearing a surgical bra or an abdominal binder to support your body and reduce swelling.

After: Recovery

You should expect to feel sore and fatigued for the first week after surgery. Take gentle walks during this time to promote healthy circulation and healing. Most patients are off pain medication in 3 to 7 days, returning to work after 2 to 3 weeks of rest. By the end of the first month, most of your swelling will have subsided, and you can enjoy your new body for years to come.
