What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation, also called a “boob job” or breast enlargement, is a plastic surgery procedure that increases the size of one or both breasts with a breast implant placed inside the body behind the natural breast tissue. The breasts can also be enlarged with fat transfer, but the increase is typically about a cup size.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost in Louisville & Lexington?

The cost of breast augmentation depends on a variety of factors, including the surgical technique, choice of breast implants, and whether it’s performed with other procedures. Do I Need Breast Augmentation or a Breast Lift?

While breast augmentation increases size, it does not reduce breast sagging significantly. During your consultation, your surgeon will determine whether he will need to combine your breast augmentation with a breast lift to provide the improvements you want.

How We Personalize Your Procedure

Breast augmentation involves many options that, when chosen properly, will help you attain the fuller breasts you want while fitting with your body, personal preferences, and lifestyle. Dr. Calobrace and Dr. Quintero provide beautiful results by carefully choosing the following with the patient in mind:

  • Breast implants can be filled with saline or silicone, and come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and profiles. We offer the innovative IDEAL IMPLANT® structured saline implants and Sientra® silicone implants, which are available only to board-certified plastic surgeons. We also offer many other FDA-approved options.
  • Incisions can be in the armpit, under the breast fold, or along the lower edge of the areola.

Dr. Calobrace and Dr. Quintero use the advanced VECTRA® 3-D imaging system to show you how you could look with different implant options.

  • Placement of implants is either directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular position) or under the pectoralis muscle (submuscular position).

What Is Breast Augmentation Revision?

Revision surgery is a procedure performed to improve the results of a previous procedure. Dr. Calobrace and Dr. Quintero perform revision breast surgery to correct complications or unsatisfactory results from breast augmentation. They also perform elective implant exchange for cosmetic reasons and breast implant removal for patients who do not want their implants replaced.

Can I Combine Other Procedures With My Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Dr. Calobrace and Dr. Quintero frequently combine breast augmentation with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck and liposuction for a mommy makeover. Women appreciate attaining multiple improvements with a single surgery and recovery period.

About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Dr. Calobrace and Dr. Quintero usually perform breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure, so you are able to return home on the day of surgery.

You are placed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The surgery takes about 1 to 3 hours to complete.

After making the incisions, your plastic surgeon creates a space for each breast implant, called the pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle. He then positions an implant within each pocket and visually inspects your breasts to make sure he’s achieved your desired breast size and a naturally attractive shape. The incisions are then closed with sutures and sealed with surgical tape.

First 1 to 2 Days

Most patients experience minor soreness and swelling. Sleeping in a recliner or propped up with pillows will help you sleep on your back and minimize swelling. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe oral pain medication you can use to control discomfort, if needed. Expect to be up and walking on the day of surgery, but not driving. Also, consider arranging care from a friend or family member for the first 24 hours following surgery, and possibly a day or so longer.

Whether you want the latest non-surgical aesthetic procedures or you desire a relaxing day spa experience, CaloSpa® Rejuvenation Center is ready to serve you.Breast aug infographic

You will have a follow-up appointment approximately 3 to 6 days after surgery.

Return to Work

Most patients are ready to return to their everyday activities within 1 to 2 weeks.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

Breast augmentation is the name of the surgical procedure; breast implants are the medical devices used to make the breasts larger (augment them).

Can I breastfeed after getting a breast augmentation?

If you let your plastic surgeon know about your desire to breastfeed in the future, your surgery should not impact your plan. During the surgery, your plastic surgeon can take special care to avoid the milk glands and associated nerves.

Are breast implants worth it?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures in our practice. Women with realistic expectations for recovery and their results are some of our happiest patients.

My breasts are different sizes. Can breast augmentation help even them out?

Yes. The human body is often naturally asymmetrical. When it comes to the breasts, we can balance their sizes by placing an implant in the smaller breast only or by placing implants of different sizes to enlarge both breasts (one more than the other).

Will my breasts feel real?

Silicone gel implants placed below the muscle provide results that feel very much like natural breasts. Learn more in this blog post.

I had breast augmentation a month ago, and my breasts look high and tight. What can I do?

After breast implants are placed, the breast skin and chest muscle take a few months to stretch and relax — allowing the implants to “drop and settle” into a natural, attractive shape. In most cases, patience is all that is required. You can call our office or wait until your next follow-up appointment to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

How safe is breast augmentation surgery?

The safety of breast augmentation is optimized when the plastic surgeon, surgical facility, and patient are all carefully chosen. If you start by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, they will make sure you’re a good candidate and perform the procedure in a safe setting.

Will I need to have my implants replaced at some point?

Many patients do not need to replace their breast implants, although these medical devices are not meant to last a lifetime. If you have no concerns and are happy with your breast size and shape, you do not need to have your implants replaced.
